Chiropractic care comes with adjustments, that are procedures that a trained specialist, also called chiropractors, uses their hands or a small instrument to apply force to a spinal joint. This force is controlled but sudden.
The goal of the procedure – also known as spinal manipulation – is to improve the spinal motion and your body’s physical function. It is done to help you with pain within your musculoskeletal system, including the most common problems:
- Back pain – upper, mid or lower back;
- Neck pain;
- Headaches;
- Shoulders, knee or ankle pain.
Are there any risks of Chiropractic Care?
The adjustments tend to be extremely safe when performed by someone trained or licensed, like the professionals we have here at Prestige. Serious complications associated with the practice are rare, but may include:
- A herniated disk or a worsening of an existing disk herniation;
- Compression of the nerves.
There are a few conditions in which chiropractic care is not advised, and you should seek other forms of treatment with your care provider. So, do not seek chiropractic care if you have:
- An increased risk of stroke;
- Cancer in the spine;
- Numbness, tingling or loss of strength in an arm or leg;
- Severe osteoporosis;
- Bone abnormality in the upper neck.
What can you expect from Chiropractic Care?
At your first appointment, the chiropractor will ask you a bunch of questions about your health history and lifestyle and also will perform a physical exam, focusing on your spine. The specialist can also recommend other exams, such as X-Rays of your spine, for example.
During the procedure, the practitioner will place you in specific positions to access and treat the areas of your pain and discomfort, and will use their hands to apply force to the joint. You may or may not hear popping and cracking sounds – if you do, don’t be worried.
During the adjustment, the spinal joints are separated, causing a drop in pressure in the synovial fluid between joints, releasing a gas bubble, that is the pop sound. And if you don’t, it is also common, and it does not mean that the manipulation wasn’t successful.
After the procedure it’s common to experience relief in the affected areas, but there are a few minor side effects, including headaches, fatigue or pain in the treated areas.
