Chiropractic procedures became popular on the internet over the past few years, and may appear to be dangerous or even intimidating, but it is far from reality. The spine manipulations that chiropractic care provides are safe and effective.
But, is Chiropractic Care Safe?
There are fewer than one per million patients that develop a serious adverse event after a chiropractic adjustment. Minor adverse events, like muscle soreness or stiffness may occur after the treatment, in some patients, but it is common and resolves itself with the next 24 to 48 hours.
If you choose the right clinic, like Prestige, with trained specialists, there’s nothing to worry about. Here at our clinic, our doctors will pay close attention to your medical history, co-existing conditions and lifestyle, because we care about your needs.
When Chiropractic Care is not Safe?
There are a few conditions that chiropractic care is not recommended and contraindicated, specially the ones that cannot have force applied on the lumbar spine. These are the “red flags” of chiropractic care, and includes:
- Severe Osteoporosis;
- Cancer in the spine;
- Spinal bone infection;
- Bone tumors;
- Inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis when in the active stage, ankylosing spondylitis, and other types of arthritis.
The Red Flags does not mean that chiropractic care is dangerous. Is just the term that the approach must be seriously adjusted and talked about after preceding with the adjustment. And there are a few treatments that are contraindicated for a specific technique, specially with the high-velocity/low-amplitude manipulation of the spine.
So you need to talk to your doctor before starting the treatment, show your concerns, talk about all your prior conditions to help them trace the best treatment plan for you.
There are any complications?
The risks and complications associated with chiropractic manipulation are rare when performed by a licensed and trained chiropractor, and when those complications occurs, they’re typically the worsening of a prior conditions, including:
- Worsening of a slipped or herniated disc;
- Compression of spinal nerves;
- And in even rarer cases, vertebral artery dissection, which is a very specific type of stroke that can occur after the manipulation on the neck.
But, there are a few other effective options you can choose!
The chiropractors also employ a multimodal treatment approach that includes other types of treatments alongside chiropractic care. The most common ones are massage therapy, physical therapy, acupuncture, yoga and other exercises and treatments that will help you with your pain, discomfort and range of motion.
There are other important things your doctor will care about, such as ergonomics, home care planning, work planning and so much more.
Chiropractic care tends to be safer than over the counter, anti-inflammatory painkillers, also known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), that are the first go-to when experiencing any type of pain.
But if you have underlying health issues, taking these medicines can be very dangerous for your health. So always make sure to seek medical attention to set the right treatment plan for your condition and pain.
